Job description

Summary Description:Under general direction of the Director of Purchasing this individual will be responsible for managing the ingredients and components for the fresh foods manufacturer. Work within multiple product categories to ensure complete supply chain loop. Manage vendor relationships, inventory levels and material movements in a fresh, Just in Time environment. Adhere to product replenishment and inventory control processes. Manage vendors and evaluate service levels to ensure competitive service & products within assigned category.

Principal Functions:         

  • Research and select suppliers for products and develop alternate supplier sources
  • Provide necessary personnel with an approved vendor list
  • Select vendors who provide competitive prices, good quality and service; coordinate and communicate with Sales, Operations, and Management on raw product quality and availability
  • Develop a review raw product specifications for purchasing
  • Observe quality of raw material purchased, create supplier performance metrics and implement supplier improvement initiatives where necessary
  • Maintain just-in-time inventory for raw materials.
  • Negotiate cost reductions and implement other cost control measures
  • Recommend major purchases of raw material based on anticipated changes in market, climate, etc.
  • Coordinate the disposition of defective or rejected materials
  • Control inbound freight to ensure timely completion of delivery schedules at the lowest cost possible.
  • Works closely with other supply chain team members to accomplish overall company goals for safety, quality, delivery, cost, and inventory.
  • Analyze market and delivery systems to assess present and future availability
  • Develops, maintains and manages a relationship with vendors and internal customers on all organizational levels that will deliver mutual benefits for the Company
  • Develops and implements purchasing and contract management instructions, policies and procedures for consistent application throughout the organization
  • Selects and approves suppliers or partners for the organization based upon a thorough selection process, in order to ensure the supplier selection is in alignment with Company strategy
  • Responsibility for negotiating the best possible pricing and terms with the vendors confirmed by contracts within the Company's directives, rules and guidelines
  • Directs and coordinates activities of personnel engaged in buying, selling, and distributing raw materials.
  • Working with Finance, Administration and Operations to ensure integrated internal controls, timely payment of vendors and full, auditable support documentation.
  • Using ERP application compile data and reporting

Job Requirements:

  • Education/Experience:  A combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance.
    • Bachelor’s Degree or Min 7 years of progressive purchasing/materials management/sourcing experience.
    • Minimum of 5 years in a managerial role.  
    • Proven raw materials price monitoring and negotiations experience
    • Experience developing standard operating procedures for a purchasing organization
  • Knowledge: 
    • Knowledge of PC, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Publisher and MS Power Point.  Possess analytical ability Computer literate with strong spreadsheet analysis skills.
    • Have experience with ERP applications as a plus
  • Competency/Skills: 
    • Planning, coordinating, and leading programs and presentations.

    • Communicating clearly and concisely orally and in writing.

    • Exceptional attention to detail.
