Job description

The Green Spring Farms Farm Manager is responsible for the day-to-day organization and oversight of the field staff farming approximately 6,000 acres in Oregon's Willamette Valley.  This position entails wide-ranging responsibilities, including staff training and supervision, deployment of equipment, managing crop schedules, communication with buyers, negotiating some contracts, and yearly planning with other managers.

Key Roles:

  • Staff Leader and Coordinator.  Manage, oversee, and delegate responsibility to staff. Set the example for employees in getting the job done safely and effectively. Provide mentoring and training for junior staff. Take responsibility for professional communication.
  • Agronomist.  Be able to make decisions regarding the growing of a variety of crops, including field preparation, planting, weeding, irrigating, pest control, and harvest. For crops outside of your area of expertise, take guidance from others effectively.
  • Equipment Operator.  When necessary, operate equipment needed to carry-out farming tasks.
  • Planner. Work with other managers on long-term plans for farm infrastructure and equipment (e.g., irrigation, tractors and harvesters) and for field rotations that integrate livestock and crop production.  Assist in the creation of annual management plans and budgets, including projections of income and expenses, staffing requirements, and maintenance schedules.
