Job description

Direct and coordinate, through subordinate supervisory personnel, activities of workers engaged in agricultural crop production.

Job Duties and Tasks:

Directs and coordinates worker activities, such as planting, irrigation, chemical application, harvesting, grading, payroll, and recordkeeping.

Contracts with farmers or independent owners for raising of crops or for management of crop production.

Coordinates growing activities with those of sales, equipment maintenance, packing houses, and other related departments.

Analyzes market conditions to help determine acreage allocations.

Confers with purchasers and arranges for harvesting of crops accordingly.

Records information, such as production, farm management practices, and yields, and prepares financial and operational reports.

 

Determines procedural changes in cooling, grading, storage, and shipment for greater efficiency and accuracy.

Analyzes soil to determine type and quantity of fertilizer required for maximum production.

Inspects equipment to ensure proper functioning.

 

Plans and directs development and production of plant varieties with high yield or disease and insect resistant characteristics.

Purchases supplies, such as tractors, seed, fertilizer, and chemicals.

 

Hires, discharges, transfers, and promotes field workers, enforces safety regulations, and interprets policies.

Food Production -- Knowledge of techniques and equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting food products, including storage/harvesting techniques.

Administration and Management -- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

Economics and Accounting -- Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, and the analysis and reporting of financial data.

Personnel and Human Resources -- Knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, labor relations and negotiation, and personnel information systems.

Production and Processing -- Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
