Job description

Position Summary:

The Agronomist will advise CW Hemp staff on the best methods to improve crop yields. The Agronomist will also make evaluations and recommendations for crop rotation, cover crops, and companion crops that pair well with hemp. In addition, this individual must be able to work in a collaborative environment with other departments as we are a vertically integrated organization.


Duties / Responsibilities:

Crop Nutrition

  • Evaluate all crop nutritional programs, adjust as necessary
  • Conduct soil and tissue sampling as appropriate
  • Use current research make fertigation, field modification, & planting density recommendations
  • Monitor crops throughout growing season and take corrective action if needed
  • Determine optimum nutrition levels for crops generating multiple end use products, including flower/oil yields and seed production



  • Monitor soil moisture levels in all growing environments, outdoor fields and indoor greenhouses
  • Evaluate, schedule, and review irrigation programs and methods including: central pivot, drip systems, and greenhouse injection systems for optimum plant health and reduction of water consumption.


Pest Management

  • Develop an inspection schedule, monitor and report pest and disease pressures of crops
  • Work with farm and greenhouse managers to develop a robust IPM program including best prevention measures, action thresholds, and control methods
  • Collaborate with university researchers to identify and understand new species of pest/diseases as they arise


Crop Advising

  • Perform risk evaluations on new land parcels
  • Generate reports on recommended companion and cover crops
  • Generate reports on short and long-term crop rotation strategies based on plant nutritional needs, growing habit, disease and insect hosts, production logistics, and budgetary concerns
  • Develop effective and novel methods for weed suppression without using herbicides



Organic & Sustainable Systems

  • Contribute and work within Good Agricultural Practices farm policies
  • Must have a working knowledge of organic and sustainable food systems and the ability to organize and manage these systems to increase crop health and yields while positively impacting soils and farm ecosystems


Seed Production

  • Experience with seed production management, certified seed, and/or organic seed is desired


Agricultural Research

  • Identify and prioritize research needs; design and draft research projects including trial designs, budgets, and ROIs.
  • Collect and analyze data using R or other statistical methods and present findings to the Board. Modify crop recommendations based on findings
  • Implementation of new technologies, equipment, and software
  • Stay up to date with all current research and hemp industry advances in agricultural inputs, methods, and techniques.


Other Duties as Necessary Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Must have an impeccable attention to detail for accurate diagnostics, data collection, analysis, and record keeping
  • Willing to travel, up to weeks at a time, to assess crop health across the country
  • Must be able to work in changing environmental conditions, outdoor environments, and walk several miles a day if necessary
  • Ability to work independently and proceed with objectives without close supervision
  • Operates effectively within teams and work groups, participates in problem solving and works collaboratively to achieve goals
  • Proficient computer skills - Microsoft Office Suite and others
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, ability to give impactful presentations
  • Effectively builds relationships with coworkers and outside colleagues
  • Organizational dexterity, ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
  • Maintains positive attitude in changing fast-paced environments
  • Active participant in continuous improvement of self, processes, and goals

  • Master's Degree or higher in Agriculture or related field with emphasis on agronomy, horticulture, crop/soil/weed science, ecology, plant physiology, plant pathology, entomology, seed production, agribusiness, greenhouse management, biochemistry, food systems, or etc.



  • No less than 10 years hands-on experience working in agronomy or closely related field
