Job description

The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the safe maintenance, repair, and/or replacement of plant equipment and systems necessary for operating the production facility.  The Supervisor schedules, coordinates and tracks the activities and projects of the Maintenance Staff.  A primary responsibility is managing a preventative maintenance process that allows the company to meet critical production goals for quantity and quality.  The Maintenance Supervisor must be self-motivated and organized to effectively analyze and resolve problems quickly.  The Supervisor will at times need to work into the evening or on weekends on an as-needed basis.

The Maintenance Supervisor is a working supervisor, and supervises a team of individuals.  Training and sharing knowledge is an integral part of the job.  The Maintenance Supervisor reports directly to the Production Manager.  Formal education, technical certificate, and/or extensive industry-related work experience is necessary.  Bilingual communication skills are a plus.  This is a year-round position located near the Tri-Cities.

Strategic responsibilities include:

  • Accountability: model and promote Broetje Orchards’ mission, vision, and core values.
  • Technical Experience: working knowledge of the various production process, equipment and technology systems necessary to meet critical production goals.
  • Leadership: work as a valued team member, develop employees as leaders, train staff to improve skill level of department, and serve as a positive role model for others.
  • Coordination: direct the Maintenance Team staff; implement a preventative maintenance program and schedule; and improve the department’s level of performance and customer service.
  • Communication: utilize reporting systems to track projects, parts and expenses; ensure quality communication between the Maintenance Team and the Production Manager.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and maintain all phases of packing line equipment and systems to keep production system running at full capacity.
  • Supervise, direct, and evaluate performance of the Maintenance Team.  Duties including but not limited to:
  • Assigning work schedules, projects and activities for the Maintenance Team;
  • Documenting performance of Maintenance Team based on team goals, productivity goals, staff development, and the company’s mission and core values;
  • Holding staff accountable in regards to worker safety, including Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined Space, Tool Usage, Chemical Handling and SQF Food Safety; the  training, record keeping and documentation, including completing work orders to track projects and parts inventory.
  • Implement a strategic preventative maintenance program to reduce equipment failures and downtime.  This would include some of the following practices:
  • Organize production facility equipment into zones; Assign and train staff to inspect and maintain specific zones;
  • Inspect equipment with Production Supervisors on a monthly basis; Document trouble areas and track maintenance progress to resolve trouble areas in a timely manner;
  • Implement a schedule for equipment replacement; Advise management about priority areas and timing for replacement.
  • Review Production Downtime Reports to identify trends and/or problem areas and work to resolve issues in a timely fashion.
  • Coach, Train and Assist Maintenance Team members with the intent of enhancing the Maintenance Team’s skill set and development of a continuous improvement program.
  • Develop a team approach when major breakdowns occur so repairs are made safely and timely, with the intent to boost productivity and reduce downtime.  
  • Play an active and contributory role in the company’s Food Safety program and sit on the Food Safety team.
  • Direct and coordinate projects where a specialty contractor has been hired to replace and/or repair equipment;
  • Implement a project work-flow process that tracks projects, assigned team members, parts and costs associated with the project.  This would include some of the following practices:
  • Train team members to use the Big Foot Work Order system;
  • Train team members to track parts and equipment through the work order system; Track department expenses;
  • Use the Work Order-Purchase Order process to track projects and expenses.
  • Maintain an accurate and well organized parts room.
  • Work with the Maintenance Team to deliver high quality customer service to the Production Team by helping and assisting when concerns and problems are raised.
  • Communicate and work with the Production Manager.  
  • Seek continuous improvement and skill development in the area of management, equipment knowledge, and technology systems.

Desired Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Knowledge of production packing systems, including hydraulics, control systems, basic electrical, and basic air systems
  • Some basic knowledge about Compac Sizer and Color-Sorting equipment and software systems
  • Mechanical ability to trouble-shoot, repair and replace packing line equipment
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals and schematics
  • Strong organizational skills, capable to schedule projects and document results
  • Strong computer and math skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills, willing to coach and train co-workers
  • Understanding of personnel supervision, including procedures for hiring, discipline, employee evaluation and termination
  • Motivated and willing to learn new software systems and skills
  • Capable to work independently and as a contributing team member
  • Ability to implement projects under pressure
  • Working experience at motivating and leading teams in a positive, thoughtful manner
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish, a plus
