Job description


West Coast Berry Farms, LLC is seeking a Human Resources / Payroll Assistant to assist the human resources and payroll functions. The position will be located in Oxnard, California. The key functions of this role will be to carry out responsibilities in the following areas: payroll, benefits administration, employee relations, employment law compliance, training, policy implementation, recruitment/employment, and onboarding. The ideal candidate will have at least two years’ experience in HR and or PR in the agricultural industry. The Human Resources and Payroll Assistant will report to the Human Resources and Payroll Managers. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Payroll and Benefits

  • Assist with weekly payroll process,

  • Review time sheets and reconcile payroll discrepancies,

  • Verify attendance and hours worked through accurate posting of detailed information,

  • Prepare and provide reports to accounting and finance department as required,

  • Supports benefits administration (401K, FSA, etc.),

  • Assists in benefits administration, including claims resolution, change reporting, approving invoices for payment and communicating benefits information to employees.,

  • Assist with data entry into HR and Payroll system,

  • Assists HR and PR with various assigned duties and analysis as requested.


Human Resources

  • Assists in maintaining Human Resource information system records and compiles reports from the database,

  • Assists and coordinates training for new and returning employees in Employee Handbook (Company policies and procedures), sexual harassment recognition and prevention, safety, EPA, heat stress, including basics on labor law, duties as a foreperson and product issues, and any other training as required

  • Manage Leave of Absence and other attendance protocols

  • Administers various human resource plans and procedures for all organization personnel; assists in the development and implementation of personnel policies and procedures; prepares and maintains the employment policies and procedures manual

  • Assist with new-employee orientations (onboarding)

  • Assists in evaluation of reports, decisions and results of department in relation to established goals. Recommends new approaches, policies and procedures to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed

  • Assist with compliance with federal, state and local employment and benefits    laws and regulations

  • Ensure compliance with company policy, rules and procedures

  • Assist with employee training and development

  • Maintains the highest standards of confidentiality.

  • Possesses good communication and presentation skills



  • Associates degree or related HR and PR experience,

  • Experience in the agricultural industry desired,

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data including presentations to management,

  • Technology savvy with fluency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

  • Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills,

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and responsibility,

  • Bi-lingual in English/Spanish is preferred and prior experience working with a bilingual, bi-cultural workforce is essential,

  • Occasional travel to our Santa Maria and Salinas locations
