POSITION TITLE: Trial Technician
POSITION LOCATION: Salinas, CA
POSITION IN THE ORGANIZATION: Is mostly part of a facility services department, reporting to the Area Sales Manager (within a country).
CLASSIFICATION: NON-EXEMPT (8hr.)
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: To execute trials and to register results.
TARGET START DATE: July 2018

Summary of responsibilities:
1. Sowing, planting and harvesting of breeding and/or screening trials for various breeding departments.
2. Collecting data from the trials incl. recording and reporting the results.
3. Is aware of the various diseases in the crops and takes the actual hygiene protocols in to account.
4. Other duties as assigned.

Brief description of responsibilities and duties:

1. Sowing, planting and harvesting of breeding and/or screening trials for various breeding departments.

  •  Organises and executes the sowing, planting of the external trials, secures proper cultural practices (like chemical treatments) in line with the purpose of the trial.
  •  Arranges transport of selected plants and/or seeds if necessary.
  •  Maintains a good relationship with the growers and plant raisers where the trials are executed and ensures that all work is done according to the standards of the relevant grower.

2. Collecting data from the trials incl. recording and reporting the results.

  •  Takes care of harvesting and collects data on a limited number of plant- or fruit traits.
  •  Reports cultural details, trial progress and expected harvest or evaluation dates and the collected data to the Breeder or Product Specialist involved according to the instructions given by the breeding department.
  •  Is responsible for an accurate and regular administration of all data concerned.
  •  Identifies and reports irregularities.

3. Is aware of the various diseases in the crops and takes the actual hygiene protocols in to account.
 Works according to the relevant protocols of the third parties in order to guarantee the quality and integrity of the trials.

4. Other duties as assigned.


PROFILE:

Education/knowledge

  •  High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  •  Training in horticulture, possibly achieved through practical experience.
  •  Seed industry experience a plus.

Skills

  •  Effective English communication skills (verbal and written), the ability to speak and understand some Spanish is preferred.
  •  The ability to work accurately, protecting the integrity of information is essential. The ability to observe /report noticeable differences/details of the growth of crops to the relevant colleagues is required.
  •  Demonstrates effective supervisory skills.
  •  Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  •  Must perform the basic operation of (mechanical) machinery, such as seed threshers, seed cleaners, transplanter,etc. and can operate a forklift. Must use farm tools appropriately, and ensure they are carefully replacing after use.

 Maintains internal contacts with the relevant colleagues (Trial Specialists, Sales Team, Breeders), and
externally with the growers where the trials are executed.

Leadership
 Supervises the seasonal labor crew, as required for all relevant activities.

Working conditions

  •  Works during both slow and very busy periods. Works on Saturday and holiday as necessary.
  •  Endures (considerable) physical strain under varying climate conditions and is exposed to in- and outdoor
  • (greenhouses and open field) working conditions.
  •  Some tasks require continuous kneeling/crouching.
  •  Ability to lift up to 60lbs.
  •  Infrequent travel, including overnight stays, may be required on occasion.
  •  Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
