Awe Sum Organics, Inc is a well-established importer and marketer of fresh organic fruit. We’ve been in business since 1985. We are a leader in the organic produce industry, with domestic and international product supply, and we market our growers’ fruit throughout the US and Canada.

Description: The Compliance and Food Safety Specialist is a position that requires excellent organizational and documenting skills, strong communication, and proven interpersonal skills. You must be self-directed and be able to anticipate the needs of the business; while being flexible enough so that when those needs change, your priorities change accordingly. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations as well as compliance with specific customer requirements. You will support and interact with all departments within the company in addition to external suppliers and customers.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure organic certification compliance
  • Ensure compliance with our customers’ food safety requests
  • Ensure compliance to customer projects and requests
  • Ensure social accountability certification compliance
  • Maintain master file of food safety documents for all growers, packhouses, and warehouses and ensure all suppliers’ certificates and full-text audits are current

  • Experience with FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act), GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative), FDA, food safety operations in the areas of GMP (Good Manufacturing Processes) and GAP (Good Agricultural Processes), and supplier assurance programs such as Primus, SQF, BRC, and/or USDA
  • In-depth knowledge of NOP (National Organic Plan) and how it relates to our business
  • Ability to prepare for and participate in annual on-site organic certification audits and resolve any corrective actions immediately
  • Ability to prepare for and participate in annual on-site social accountability audits and resolve any corrective actions immediately
  • Ability to liaison with our customers, our suppliers, and our employees to meet the special requests of those customers as they relate to food safety and/or organic certification
  • Maintain the FSVP (Foreign Supplier Verification Programs) for importer; providing continuous updates as supply needs change, assuring constant compliance to FSMA and all FDA regulations.
  • Knowledge of our supply chain to ensure that all aspects of organic certification and food safety are being met in real time (ex: working with business development to ensure potential suppliers meet our organic and food safety standards before we represent them, and then working closely with those suppliers to ensure compliance; working with Logistics to ensure that all domestic storage and repack warehouses are NOP-compliant)
  • Implement and monitor protocols ensuring compliance with internal standards, contracts and regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct research in order to remain current on and implement various state and federal restrictions for agricultural crops.
  • Strong interest in and knowledge of industry trends, compliance regulations, and food safety
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various business associates internally and externally.
  • High integrity and respect for confidentiality requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Organic produce knowledge is desirable
  • MS Office competency
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate with suppliers in different countries, time zones, and languages (bi-lingual preferred)

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common industry information, orders and packing information. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers. Ability to write clearly and present numerical data efficiently.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to calculate rate, ration and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of information and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
